This Week in Five #26 – Celebrate

With the exception of some problematic technical issues (Windows update of Doom) this week has been good! It began with trip to The Norfolk Mead Hotel for a night away to start my 40th birthday celebrations. The evening involved exceptionally good food (although I was a bad blogger and only took a photo of my starter!), lovely wine, a super soft bed and the best shower ever. I will admit to feeling slightly delicate when I woke on Saturday morning but a really tasty Eggs Benedict for breakfast helped get me back onto an even keel.

One of the funny things I’ve found about being a parent is that no matter how much you love spending time with your kids, sometimes you really crave some time to yourself. But when that opportunity comes all you end up doing is missing the little ones. That’s precisely what happened to me last weekend. We didn’t need to check out of the hotel until late morning, but I really started to miss the kiddies. So we had packed our bags, checked out and were pulling into our driveway at home before 9am! Walking into the house to be greeted by a chorus of ‘Happy Birthday Mummy’ (or ‘Appy Burpday!’ from G) was lovely, and very soon we were all snuggling on the sofa with mugs of tea, eating birthday chocolate and watching Frozen. I felt so lucky to be at home with the people I love the most – it really was the loveliest way to celebrate my birthday.

Here’s the weekly roundup:

Birthday cake. ALL THE CAKE! The kiddies made a chocolate cake (with hubs help of course!) for my birthday – and happily stuck a 40 candle on it (because apparently there wouldn’t have been space for 40 individual ones!) I do have to mention the food at The Norfolk Mead. Ah-maz-ing!  We have been there twice, and both times we have been blown away by the quality of the food – it really is the best I’ve ever had.

Frantically trying to save the contents of my elderly laptop before it takes its last breath. The most recent Windows update proved to be too much for my poor little pit pony, and at one point I thought I had lost everything forever (yes, I am that person who kept saying ‘must upload my files to the cloud one day,’ but didn’t actually do it!). I had a little cry at the thought of all the photos I might have lost, and kicking myself at the thought of four years worth of invoices and business correspondence being gone forever. And then I pulled myself together and sorted it out.

Somehow I managed to get the laptop going, and have pretty much spent my week uploading everything to cloud storage. Hopefully I will be getting a new laptop next week, and hopefully this one will last until then, because without it I am pretty much up the proverbial creek without a paddle.

In other news – it snowed! So far this year we have avoided it, and if I’m honest I was a bit grumpy about that because I really wanted the kiddies to experience it. But the snow Gods decided to give us a sprinkling overnight on Sunday. It was enough to make the drive to school a bit nerve-wracking, especially as more snow started to come down heavily just as we were leaving the house. Typically though, by lunch time it had all cleared away, and you wouldn’t have known it had snowed at all!

I spent a large chunk of last weekend curled up on the sofa flicking through my recipe books – one of my favourite ways to while away a few hours!

We have just had our annual re-watching of The Lord of The Rings trilogy – I love these films, and having been very disappointed by the recent Hobbit films I felt the need to see them again.

We have started watching the fourth season of House of Cards too. We have seen two episodes so far, so no spoilers please!

Also, have you seen the trailer for the next season of Game of Thrones? I have, and April 25th cannot get here quick enough in my opinion!

This might sound a bit cheesy, but by far the best thing I have listened to this week is M & G singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to me last Saturday. They may have been out of tune, and got some of the words mixed up, but they did it with such enthusiasm and gusto – it was fab. I love those two so much!

I know! I actually woke up thinking that it didn’t feel right that our son hadn’t come for cuddles during the night, as he normally does, and that was it – I needed to come home! xxx

Happy Birthday! I don’t save to the cloud, but every so often I burn discs and save stuff.

I would normally save things to disc too – but my laptop is so old that the disc drive doesn’t work very well either. xxx

Happy belated birthday. Sounds like a great way to celebrate. I know what you mean about missing the children. I’d be forever pointing out something to them, only to find they weren’t actuallly there. Hope the laptop holds up long enough.
