Muscle Food Family Hamper Review

One of my aims for this year is to lose some weight – I say ‘aim’ because resolutions and me just don’t get along. Last year I joined Slimming World in an effort to ditch a spare tyre or two, and I managed to lose around a stone in total. But to be honest, at the time, my heart just wasn’t in it, and I didn’t really enjoy the group element of it, so I didn’t put as much effort in as I could have.

What I did like though was the variety of foods I could eat, and I spent many an hour reading blogs that focus on SW recipes. My favourite blog for SW ideas is Two Chubby Cubs. They have some amazing recipes, and a wicked sense of humour to boot! It was through reading Two Chubby Cubs that I first came across the name Muscle Food, an online brand that sells an extensive range of lean meats, seafood and ready meals among other things.

Then a few weeks ago the chaps at Muscle Food got in touch to see if I would like to review one of their variety packs. I was quite intrigued as I have never had meat delivered by courier before – I normally prefer to be able to see what I’m buying either in the butchers or the supermarket. I had completely unnecessary worries about how fresh the meat would be, would the packaging be good enough to keep the meat perfectly chilled, would the meat be of good quality, surely the chicken will be pumped full of water?

When the parcel arrived via free delivery from DPD, and in a guaranteed one-hour time slot, I was really impressed with just how securely packaged everything was. Inside an extremely sturdy cardboard box was an even sturdier insulated bag which contained the meat and a few freezer blocks. The meat itself was very well packaged and vacuumed packed.

I started to remove the meat from the box and was absolutely amazed at the sheer amount of meat you get for the price – the family hamper, the one we received, is £65 and contains:

24 Chicken breasts in two 2.5kg packs

4 Grass fed, free range sirloin steaks

4 Grass fed, free range Rump Steaks

2 x 250g Grass fed, free range steak mince

2 x Grass fed, free range Hache steaks

20 Grass fed, free range Beef meatballs

2 x Extra Lean grass fed, free range burgers

6 Chicken sausages

2 x Packs marinated piri piri chicken skewers

6 Meaty pork sausages

4 Sweet Chilli chicken burgers

14 Low-fat bacon medallions

2 x Minced Turkey thigh packs – these were added in as a free bonus

1 Sachet of Deep South seasoning

4 High Protein Vanilla Cream Pudding

I was interested to see how the price of the hamper compares to the supermarket and based on prices at Sainsbury’s I worked out that the meat in the hamper is roughly around £20 cheaper than the equivalent would cost in store which is, quite frankly, amazing.

The important question though is ‘does the meat taste good?’ – yes, it really does! We had the meatballs on the day the hamper was delivered, and they were so full of flavour. Possibly the best meatballs we’ve had – even my fussy five year old ate them all up!

Since then we have had rump steak, and again, these were very nice. We have also had some of the chicken breast and I was very impressed to see not a drop of water come out of it during cooking. The chicken breast from Muscle Food has won a Great Taste Award, and it’s easy to see why as it is delicious. Because it’s not pumped full of water or salt it doesn’t reduce in size when cooked either. Normally I would allow an extra breast to make up for what is lost due to water etc, with the chicken breast from Muscle Food I have no need to do this.

I am so pleased that Muscle Food reached out to me for the purpose of this review as my preconceived worries about buying meat online had put me off doing so, but now that I have seen how well packaged and how fresh the meat, not to mention how cost effective it is, is I will definitely be using Muscle Food again for my meat order.

Muscle Food kindly provided with a Family Hamper for the purpose of this review but, as ever, all thoughts, words and images are my own.

A few people have recommended Muscle Food to me but it was so nice to read an honest review about them. We love healthy eating in our house and we buy a lot of meat especially food prep for pre and post gym. Great post!

Thank you! I really can’t recommend them enough, and I was very skeptical about buying meat online beforehand.
