Two years ago, on January 8th, 2015, I published my first post on Pushing the Moon. I didn’t know where that post would take me, and I’m as surprised as anybody who knows me well that I am still here, writing, two years later. I am known for never finishing projects – I’m a glorious underachiever in life, really – so to still be tapping away at this little space of mine is nothing short of miraculous.
When I published my first birthday post I talked about the things I would like to achieve in 2016, with the main one being the decision to not mention the kids so much. I think, for the most part, I have been successful in this. Yes, they still pop up here and there, but I feel I have made the transition from family lifestyle to more of a pure lifestyle blog pretty well.
2016 saw me work on some amazing brand collaborations, including my favourite brand, TK Maxx – twice! 2016 also saw massive, for me, growth across some of my social media channels. In January 2016 I had around 600 followers on Twitter and I ended the year having hit 5000. Then there is Instagram – my favourite social channel. I started 2016 with 400 followers, and just a few days before Christmas I hit 7000. I had a goal of reaching 1000 by the end of the year, so to hit 7000 absolutely blew me away.
Finally, I ended 2016 with Pushing the Moon having made the top 100 of the HIBS100 UK Lifestyle Blogs ranking – reaching 79! To be ranked in the top 100 along with some of my absolute most favourite blogs is both bewildering and overwhelming, but at the same time amazing and a massive confidence booster. I don’t expect to stay within the top 100, but I know that having done it once I can do it again.
Perhaps the very best thing that has happened to me this year, in terms of blogging, is the friendships I have made. Blogging can be a very insular world at times, and I know that at certain points I found it to be a lonely one too. But several months ago I started chatting to a few bloggers through our mutual love of Instagram.
We soon realised that we are like-minded individuals, and found ourselves talking every single day. We talk about blogging, we bounce ideas off each other, we support each other when we publish posts, but most importantly we talk about our daily lives. We moan to each other, we laugh like hyenas daily, we discuss our families, our kids, our lives. We became firm friends very quickly, and now I can’t imagine them not being in my life.
They gave me support earlier this year when I got hacked and then experienced a particularly nasty troll. I was ready to jack Pushing the Moon in, but they gave me the encouragement I needed to push through. I was lucky enough to meet a couple of them at this years Britmums Live (when I say meet, I mean I clung onto them for dear life as my anxiety about being there was going through the roof!).
Who are these ladies, I hear you ask? (okay, maybe you are not asking, but they are such an important part of my life now that I’m going to tell you anyway). In no particular order, they are: Harriet from Toby & Roo, Laura from Life With Baby Kicks, Jenny from Monkey & Mouse, Hannah from Hi Baby, Danielle from Someone’s Mum, Leanne from A Slice of My Life…. Wales, Louise from Pink Pear Bear, Beth from Twinderelmo, Lisa from The Love of a Captain, and Emma from Emma & 3. I don’t make friends easily, I have two close friends in my ‘real’ life, so to have found such an amazing group of supportive and sassy women is something I will never take for granted. They say it takes a village to raise a child. They are my village, in my virtual world.
I’m looking forward to the coming year, excited to see what 2017 will bring for Pushing the Moon. I am really enjoying blogging, it has become such an important part of my life, and I hope it continues to be so for a very long time.
