This post is written in collaboration with Hollywood Bowl. One of our favourite activities to do, as a family, is go ten-pin bowling. Admittedly, we aren’t very good at it (well, I’m definitely not), and I can’t see either me or Rob joining a league any time soon, but we still have a lot of fun whenever we go.
Over the last year or so we have started heading into Norwich with the kids quite regularly on the weekend – either to go to the cinema or grab some lunch at the Riverside complex. Whenever we head there the kids always ask to go to the arcade at Hollywood Bowl – G’s love for the 2p game machine knows no bounds – and we more often than not let them have a bit of time there.
But despite being arcade regulars we had never booked a game of ten-pin bowling at Hollywood Bowl. Until last weekend, that is, when we were invited to come along for a game in one of Hollywood Bowl’s VIP lanes and to have lunch in the Diner afterward to celebrate the 1st anniversary of their big refurbishment.
Hollywood Bowl – The VIP Lanes
The VIP lanes at Hollywood Bowl are a brilliant addition to the venue. Hidden away on the left-hand side of the bowling lanes and located behind some pretty darn sumptuous velvet curtains the VIP lanes are the perfect option for anyone wanting to make their day feel a bit special.
What makes these lanes different from the others? Well, there are just four VIP lanes available. The seating area, hidden away from those playing on the other lanes, is made up of comfy black leather benches, and there is plenty of storage space to the side for coats and bags.
Even the bowling balls with their unique game of pool style design and the brightly coloured pins are different from those used on the normal lanes.
The thing that really makes the VIP Lane experience worthwhile though is the personal service you receive. Your very own VIP host will come to you whenever you want to take and bring you orders for drinks and nibbles, so you never have to leave the comfort of your bowling lane.
And if you are really lucky, like us, you might find that your host is James (also known as Magic) who will happily amaze the kids with his brilliant selection of card tricks. Even now, a couple of days after we visited Hollywood Bowl M is still talking about the Magic Man!
James even took our main food order while we were playing our game so that we wouldn’t have to wait for it for too long when we went and sat in the Diner area which, with two permanently ravenous children, was a little extra touch that we really appreciated.
Hollywood Bowl – The Diner
To be completely honest I wasn’t expecting great things from the Diner – I had it in my head that the food would most likely be tiny portions, bland tasting, and probably pre-cooked and reheated in the microwave. I couldn’t have been more wrong.
We ordered a selection of items to try out. The kids went with their favourite, hot dogs. Both Rob and I chose burgers – he opted for the bun free option, whereas I live for carbs so I had mine with bun. We also ordered some popcorn chicken and halloumi fries.
Firstly, the portions are a really good size. The burgers, in particular, were really good and very filling and the kids absolutely loved their hot dogs too. But my favourite things had to be the popcorn chicken and halloumi fries. They were so tasty, and the portions were far bigger than I was expecting considering they came from the ‘snacks’ section of the menu. We all had contented bellies after eating, it’s fair to say.
Hollywood Bowl – The Arcade
Once we had finished our food and managed to drag our big bellies away from the comfort of our booth the kids had a final flurry of fun in the arcade. G naturally gravitated towards the 2p machine while M and Rob went tried out a couple of arcade games including Jurassic park and a racing game. G and I then had a go on a racing simulator, which was a lot of fun. We ended our brilliant day at Hollywood Bowl with a particularly bonkers game of Air Hockey, where I nearly lost my knuckles at one point thanks to M who, it turns out, is an Air Hockey demon!
Hollywood Bowl – Competition
We had such a fun time at Hollywood Bowl so we have teamed up with them to offer one reader the following competition prize:

Hollywood Bowl very kindly provided us with a game of bowling on the VIP Lanes, drinks and a meal in the Diner for the purpose of this review, however, as always, all words, thoughts and images are my own.
