Date Night Cooking Fun With the HelloFresh Flavour Generator

Saturday is my favourite day of the week. That’s because Saturday is ‘home date night’. Each week we feed the kiddies early, then Rob and I take it in turns to cook for each other.

Recently we have been going through a big Middle Eastern cookery phase (I plan on cooking every recipe in Persiana by Sabrina Gayhour), and I was fully expecting Rob to suggest a tagine or something equally yummy.

But when he said, “I’m in the mood for Italian food” I was a bit stumped, if I’m honest. Not because I can’t cook Italian food – I can, I love cooking it as much as I love eating it (and that’s a lot of love, let me tell you!). I was stumped because it just wasn’t what I expected him to say.

I spent a while looking through my Italian cookery books, but neither of us could agree on a recipe we both wanted to try. So, I decided that we needed a little help.  A little inspiration in the form of the HelloFresh Flavour Generator

You, and I, probably know of HelloFresh as the company that makes recipe boxes to suit your lifestyle, delivered to your door each week. But did you also know that they have a ‘Flavour Generator’ on the website, a handy tool to use when you are in need of some cooking inspiration?

Using the Flavour Generator is so simple. You click what type of cuisine you like and then decide if you want something tangy, spicy, sweet etc – once you have done this you click the ‘Generate My Flavour’ button and, voila, two distinct flavours are picked, with a selection of recipes using those flavours displayed beneath.

For our date night recipe, I chose Italian food, clicked ‘Tangy’ and was presented with basil and black olives as my two flavours. The recipe choices for those flavours were Pan-Fried Bream with Crushed New Potatoes and Sweet Tomato Salsa or Beef Ragout with Black Olive and Tomato Salsa.

We both decided that we liked the sound of the Bream recipe, so off I trotted to Sainsbury’s to buy the ingredients. Unfortunately, Sainsbury’s didn’t have any Bream so I had to substitute that with Sea Bass instead.

It turned out to be one of easiest, and most delicious, recipes I’ve made for one of our date nights. If you have ever bought a HelloFresh box before you will know that you are sent recipe cards with handy photo instructions – and this is no different for the recipes on the website.

Within the space of 30 minutes, I had made delicious crushed potatoes, pan fried the Sea Bass and made an incredibly moreish salsa (so moreish that I ate quite a bit of it before it made it to the plate!). The only hiccup I experienced was with the Sea Bass – I don’t know if the pan wasn’t hot enough when I added the fish, or if I hadn’t used enough oil but the skin side stuck to the pan a bit. However, that didn’t detract from the flavour in the slightest.

The finished meal was delicious – it’s just a shame I had issues cooking the skin.

The Flavour Generator was such fun to use, perfect for someone as indecisive as me, and the recipes were of the high standard you would expect from a brand like HelloFresh. I can see us using the Flavour Generator whenever we need a little culinary inspiration from now on.

Have you used the Flavour Generator yet? What was your favourite recipe?
